Lost Under the Mountain
Fantasy illustration:
I used to fill my jr. highschool sketchbooks with high fantasy. It feels incredibly nostalgic to return to the subject matter after such a long time.
Some process sketches (digital and graphite) as I was coming up with my idea:

Mr. Purrington
Steampunk cat.
This is part of a series I've been working on with a friend. It's a "they write/ I illustrate" sort of collaboration, and I'm tackling some short stories they're currently writing.

Tuesday Life-drawing in Toronto
I attend open life-drawing at the Keyhole Sessions in Toronto on Tuesday evenings -- the best multi figure life-drawing I've experienced since art school.
Here is one of the many pages in my sketchbook that I've been filling up with content from the evenings there:
Two models from different nights, repeated drawings done in ballpoint pen.

Keyhole Sessions Drawing
I've been liking the 'drawing overlap' I get in between the pages of my sketchbook. I decided to try it out in a more refined drawing.

The return, a show, and news
I've returned from Amherst with another Illustration Master Class complete.
I spent mid-June here:
The entire workshop revolves around attempting a book-cover assignment under the guidance of illustrators and art directors. The student chooses which topic they want to do an illustration for, they draw up some refined concepts, and then the faculty helps to make it better and take the student through the painting stage to the end.
A lot of other things are covered like reference, obtaining models, more effective ways to work out compositions in a rough, etc.
There were several different assignments to choose from. I selected Beauty and the Beast.
My initial sketch before the workshop started:
My revised drawing:
some painting later....
Traditional final so far:
AND
... Now that I'm back in Toronto it will be in this show, this Saturday at the Gladstone in Toronto (along with the brown paper drawing)
-- so come on out :)

Illustration Master Class 2010
I'm currently at IMC 2010. It's a week long workshop where master fantasy and sci-fi illustrators guide us through a difficult book cover painting.
When we're not painting we are either in the lecture hall receiving some amazing advice, eating, or sometimes even sleeping.
The faculty:
Rebecca Guay
James Gurney
Greg Manchess
Donato Giancola
Julie Bell
Boris Vallejo
Dan DosSantos
Scott Fischer
Irene Gallo
Jeremy Jarvis
IMC
I went last year and it was incredible. This year is no different in that regard.
I'll post more later.

Brown Paper Drawing
I enjoyed using a drawing on toned paper when I completed the illustrations for the various Shakespeare plays. I decided to take a similar approach and work on something larger.
Thanks Faestock, for the reference.

Shakespeare Posters
Here are some illustrations I completed for Kitchener Waterloo Youth Theater. They are going to be used on the posters to advertise and promote the performances.
The Shakespeare plays performed were Othello, Hamlet, and the Merchant of Venice. I also designed wrap-around cover of their program

Drawing on TV
While working on a drawing at the Keyhole Sessions, I was briefly recorded sketching for the CP24 television show Sex Matters – hosted by Cynthia Loyst. You can still view the episode on their website:

Christmas Holidays
Some drawings I did over Christmas.
While doing these I had flashbacks to six years ago when I originally set out on a quest to create a portfolio to get myself accepted to art school. The sketchbook was the first place I started.
